KARACHI: Former petroleum minister and President PPP Karachi division Dr. Asim Hussain was released yesterday after 19 months of detention and shifted from Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Complex to the Ziauddin Hospital.
The Sindh High Court on Friday issued orders to release Dr. Asim Hussain on bail after he submitted his passports that were being held by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in connection with another case.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto congratulated Dr Asim, saying Dr Asim went through mental and physical difficulties during these last 19 months.
“The federal government’s vengeful acts cannot intimidate us, the PPP Chairman said. It is worth mentioning that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman and former president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari had fiercely defended his close aide in difficult times.
On Thursday, Dr. Asim Hussain’s legal team had moved the high court to amend the requirements for furnishing bail and the court had rejected the application; however, when the ATC returned the passports being held in another case he was able to furnish them before the high court and secure bail. Along with his passports, Dr. Asim has secured bail after submitting surety bonds to the value of Rs 5,000,000.
On Thursday, Dr. Asim Hussain’s Advocate Owais Jamal had moved the high court to amend the requirements for furnishing Original Passports and it could not be deposited because those are already deposited in ATC court in another bail No. 993/2016 by High Court order.
Despite this fact, the Bench of Justice Farooq Shah refused and sent the matter to CJ Sindh High Court; however, when the ATC returned the passports being held in another Bail he was able to furnish it before the Nazir of high court and secure bail. Along with his passports, Dr. Asim secured bail after submitting surety bonds to the value of Rs 5,000,000 i.e., Rs. 2,500,000/- each reference.
The court order was passed in Constitution Petition Nos. D-1696 of 2016 and CP No. D-7597 of 2015.
