Washington DC: Maxine Waters, the member of US Congress has expressed her concern over the deteriorating health of Dr Asim Hussain and urged for investigating the situation to ensure that Dr Hussain is granted a fair trial and access to the medical care that he needs.

Maxine Waters is the US Representative for California’s 43rd congressional district, serving since 1991. She is member of the Democratic Party. In her letter dated May 13, 2016 addressed to Jalil Abbas Jilani, Ambassador of Pakistan in Washington Maxine said Dr Asim Hussain is a well-known Pakistani physician who is active in the fields of public health and education. He is the chairman of the Ziauddin Group of Hospitals in Karachi, and he helped establish the Ziauddin University, a research university with an emphasis on health, medicine and biomedical engineering.

“Dr Asim was reportedly arrested on August 26, 2015, on charges of financing terrorism through his hospital. He is being held without bail. He was allegedly forced to stand up all night in a dark room while blindfolded with his hands tied. During this time, he reportedly went into kidney failure and had a heart attack. I have been informed that Dr Hussain remains in custody despite lack of evidence against him, and he is currently awaiting trial. He claims he is innocent.”

Maxine further wrote that several hospital employees who were close to Dr Hussain were allegedly detained and tortured. In addition, the hospital was allegedly raided, staff members were threatened, and confidential medical records were removed. Furthermore, Dr Hussain’s prolonged absence from his hospital has reportedly caused suffering among his large patient community. It is desired that he may be granted bail and released from custody so that he can return to his family and resume treatment for his patients. “I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter,” the Congress woman concluded.
