Wasim, Rauf & Anis held, Patel surrenders

ATC Judge ignored critical evidence: Dr Asim

By Nasir Mahmood

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders Wasim Akhtar, Rauf Siddiqi, and Pak Sarzameen Party president Anis Qaimkhani were taken into custody in Dr Asim Hussain case after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) rejected their interim bail yesterday. Whereas, PPP leader Abdul Qadir Patel first whisked away from the courtas his bail plea was also rejected but later surrendered to the police at Boat Basin police station. Later talking to media, Dr Asim Hussain said the court’s order was entirely based on JIT report whereas he had challenged the veracity of the JIT but my voice was not considered in previous hearings. Rather ATC judge ignored critical evidence in my case. It may be mentioned here that the all the co-accused in the case never rangup Dr Asim which they had time and again said publicly during their visit to the court on their hearings. Declaring his arrest ‘unconstitutional and unlawful,’ the former petroleum minister said he was being politically victimised. He said the Court did not hear his plea and rejected his bail application in the previous hearing. After arrest Waseem Akhtar said, “We feel that the case on Dr Asim is based on political victimisation where a concocted investigation report was created for media distribution only. The MQM nominated mayor added that the ATC judge said to him that she was “under pressure and helpless.” While talking to the media at Boat Basin police station Qadir Patel viewed, “When I reached the court, the door was closed and I could not enter. Hence, after waiting for a few minutes I left.” The political leaders were on pre-arrest bail for at least six months. Their applications were fixed before the ATC-II judge for confirmation or otherwise.
