Dawn – Dr Asim case

Dr-Asim-case

I AM shocked to know that so far more than one judge in the Sindh High Court has recused himself from hearing the bail pleas filed by Dr Asim Hussain, the former petroleum and natural resources minister.

This is very astonishing and raises many questions about the sufferings of the accused in various cases. Already the legal procedure in our country is lengthy and in many cases the accused has to wait for years for judgment.

Dr Asim is facing three trials: one in an anti-terrorism court and the other two in the national accountability court. The question is: what is the obstacle in hearing Dr Asim’s bail pleas? The honorable court should hear and give a verdict. He has been in jail custody for more than a year and during this period his health has deteriorated, according medical reports.

Although I am not a lawyer but fail to understand the reasons behind this behaviour. This is unfair to a citizen. One is innocent until proved guilty.
